Primary Hazards

Overview

Overview

Mars presents numerous challenges to settlers due to its hostile environment. Hazards, occurring unexpectedly, disrupt supply lines and decrease equipment efficiency, compelling astronauts to take extra downtime for mental and physical recuperation.

Primary Hazards

Primary Hazards are those that occur directly from the environment or natural causes. These tend to last longer, and have more of a substantial impact on the items within the settlement

Dust Storms - Dust storms on Mars, fueled by low atmospheric density and sunlight, vary from small devils to planet-wide phenomena, primarily in the southern hemisphere, lasting months and impacting weather patterns.

Screeching Winds - The high winds and grating sounds of Mars, especially during dust storms, can strain astronauts mentally, leading to cabin fever and reduced efficiency during prolonged storms.

Static Storms - Dust-induced static storms on Mars threaten power generation and equipment, risking damage and halting operations.

Brittle Airlines - On Mars, the reduced atmosphere and exposure to solar radiation make pipelines brittle, especially those carrying oxygen, with cracks leading to leaks, often necessitating production shutdowns and disrupting the supply chain.
